The current events for which we are seeking volunteers is East York Trivia Mondays.
8 Sep to 15 Dec – 6pm to 11pm
Location is Woodbine & Mortimer in East York

You get dinner, 2 drinks (pop), a t-shirt, and a night of fun.

So you know, a background check may be required.

Content Creator (Video)

Let’s start simple. Family Shed is running the East York Trivia Monday series from 8 Sep to 15 Dec. We want to shoot some video of people having fun and share it on social media. This is where you come into the picture.

You have three cameras for sure. Two are stationary and one is an Insta 360. Of course, you could have more since we all have cameras in our pockets these days, right? The idea is to have some crowd footage to cut in with shots of people winning a round, getting a prize, or just having a spectacular time.

No experience is needed. We’re starting simple, right? Part of that is figuring out what makes good footage, the best place to put cameras, and getting a feel for the excitement is in the room.

You work with the video editor(s) to make shorts and stills, and the posts that go with them. Experience shows you what kind of shots get the most attention, and the team works – well, as a team – to make improvements.

This posting says you need some organising skills. That’s true. You need to be able to walk and chew gum while having a conversation. Everything else you can learn along the way. No one needs to be Zack Snyder right out of the gate.

It’s every Monday evening (except Thanksgiving) from 6pm to 11pm. You get dinner, two drinks (no alcohol though), and budding social media influencer bragging rights.

To be clear, there is a little extra time needed the first time you volunteer. Everything is dead nuts simple, but it’s just plain smart to walk things through before you have the pressure of an event, yes? So we’ll take 20 minutes, walk through setting up the cameras and using them, and you’re off to the races.

Content Editor (Video)

You know this one had to be here, right? If someone is making content, there has to be someone doing the editing, yes? Can you imagine slapping two hours of people playing trivia games onto YouTube?

First thing… I apologise for the skills listed under “What the volunteer will be doing.” There are actually no skills listed that relate to content creation of editing. I did the best I could with what is available.

Okay. Family Shed is running the East York Trivia Monday series from 8 Sep to 15 Dec. We are shooting video of people having fun and sharing it on social media. This is where you come into the picture as an editor.

You have two hours of video from at least three cameras. Now it has to be cut down into shorts and a little bit of longform content. How does that get done?

The idea is to have some crowd footage to cut in with shots of people winning a round, getting a prize, or just having a spectacular time. How do you pull that out of six hours of video, right? That’s where you team building skills come into play.

Yes, experience is definitely needed here.

You help the camera operators with figuring out what makes good footage, the best place to put cameras, and getting a feel for the excitement is in the room. You mentor them on how to keep notes while shooting so it’s way easier for you to find highlights. Eventually, we might get to the point of having a computer that allows you to edit on the fly. But that’s a ways off, and at least one grant away.

In the meantime, you make shorts and stills, the posts that go with them, and help a couple other folks learn how to do what you do. Many hands make light work, yes?

You have to come through the door with editing and organising skills. There’s no need to be Zack Snyder (especially since he’s a director rather than an editor), but it might help to be leaning toward Conrad Hall (father or son).

It’s every Monday evening (except Thanksgiving) from 6pm to 11pm. You get dinner, two drinks (no alcohol though), and budding social media influencer bragging rights. You also get the joy of wrangling the camera operators while looking for the people who want to follow in your footsteps.

There is a little more time needed when you start. We need to get together so you can see the equipment and the venue. There’s also the conversation about putting the plan into play to make the content attractive. There’s always that pesky penis-measuring contest for likes, shares, followers, and subscribers.

Food Prep & Server

Seems like a rather unassuming position, yes? Prep some food. How hard can it be?

You’re right. The work is simple. Make Caesar salad. Serve food made by Oak Park Deli and Family Bakery Cafe with Caesar salad on the side. That’s easy… except…

There is cutting the lettuce for Caesar salad. Cutting the prepared food into servings. Plating the food. Cleaning dishes and cutlery. Is it getting a little more complex?

As you can imagine, food handler training is required. If you happened to work in the Food Hall at the CNE this year, you’re probably covered. If you have yet to get the training, we can arrange that.

Oh, an important point – the kitchen is on the second floor and the event is happening on the third floor. There’s a good chance you’ll get in all your steps.

You will also be putting food into an oven and taking it out. Let’s avoid burns, yes?

What will you be doing?

Preparing and serving food

Washing dishes

Using knives and serving utensils

What skills do you need?

Excellent personal hygiene

Good eye-hand coordination

Using an oven and handling hot items

Admission & Registration

The event is PWYC. People can register on lu.ma. And folks are encouraged to be part of a team. This is your part in the play.

Family Shed is running the East York Trivia Monday series from 8 Sep to 15 Dec The first step to get up and running each week is placing signs at the main entrance on Woodbine Ave. As a polite host, we then make sure people know dinner is available, snacks are ready to go, and beer is in the fridge.

Be sure to point out the ticket table. Folks need tickets for drinks (blue for beer, pink for pop), dinner, and the 50/50 draw. You make sure they know where to get them.

It’s a pretty simple gig. You just need to enjoy meeting people, answering questions, and helping folks get situated.

Volunteer Wrangler

Are you a parent or grandparent? Or, more accurately, are you a kind, loving parent or grandparent who enjoys spending time with folks of all ages?

Yes? Excellent! Let’s chat.

Family Shed is running the East York Trivia Monday series from 8 Sep to 15 Dec. There is a long list of things for volunteers to do, and we need a couple folks to help everyone stay organised. It’s easier than herding cats, and a little harder than staying home.

The most important part is being patient. Which also means you need to learn the systems being used. We’re using Square to take payments and counting by hand to check inventory. You probably want an hour or so to walk through everything so we can keep everyone on the same page.

Volunteers are doing:

Food prep & serving

Selling tickets for drinks and food

Selling merchandise

Shooting video, editing, and posting to social media

You’re just helping them stay organised. You’re also the person helping them stay organised. Get it? Simple and important.

Social Media Manager

Since we’re making content, and editing content, there has to be someone to do something with the content, yes? That said, the title is Social Media Manager, but the content goes onto a website before it ever hits social media.

Do you understand what that means? It means thinking through what goes onto the site FamilyShed.ca, what goes onto social media (and which platforms), and how the one directs people to the other.

Family Shed is running the East York Trivia Monday series from 8 Sep to 15 Dec. We are shooting video of people having fun and sharing it on social media. This is where you come into the picture as the Social Media Manager.

You work with the video editor and the camera operators. You might even be handling a camera yourself. You’re thinking as a team about how to make the events attractive on camera so we build an audience. Then there’s always the fact that people love seeing their name in print and their faces on TV. You get to make that happen for folks.

You have two hours of video from at least three cameras. Now it has to be cut down into shorts and a little bit of longform content. How does that get done?

Answer: You, the video editor, and the camera operators are working as a team with a common goal.

The idea is to have some crowd footage to cut in with shots of people winning a round, getting a prize, or just having a spectacular time. How do you pull that out of six hours of video, right? That’s where your team building skills come into play.

Now, it would be easy to suppose you need some massive experience running teams and producing content. That’s great if you have it, but you can definitely start with a knack for working with others and the desire to do more.

You and the editor help the camera operators with figuring out what makes good footage, the best place to put cameras, and getting a feel for the excitement is in the room. You mentor them on how to keep notes while shooting so it’s way easier for the editor and you to find highlights.

Snack Sales

This might be better labelled Snack & Ticket Sales. There are definitely snacks; chips and candy bars. There are also tickets for beer, pop, and dinner.

Family Shed is running the East York Trivia Monday series from 8 Sep to 15 Dec. Folks generally like to snack and drink while they play so you get to help fill their need.

No experience is needed. We’ll teach you what to do. All you really need is a pleasant disposition and willingness to be helpful.
